What is Resin Bound?

Many people get confused when it comes to the definition of ‘resin-bound’. It is commonly mistaken to be another name for a resin-bonded surface, but in reality, these are two completely different things!

Resin Bonded

In a nutshell, a resin-bonded surface is where the resin is applied to the surface and loose aggregate is scattered on top. This gives the surface a textured appearance and makes it non-permeable. The installation of resin-bonded surfaces is typically quicker than resin-bound surfaces, but it creates a rougher finish. Benefits of resin-bonded surfaces include its strength, making it ideal for high-traffic areas. It is also slip-resistant making it safe to use in wet or slip-prone environments. Maintenance isn’t a massive requirement for resin-bonded surfaces, but regular sweeping and occasional power washing should keep it looking brand new.

Resin Bound

Resin-bound surfaces mean the aggregate and resin are mixed before it is poured. This allows for a smooth, aesthetically pleasing finish as well as a functionally permeable surface for better drainage. Typically it is laid on a flat, suitable surface to allow for a seamless finish. The benefits of resin-bound surfaces include it being porous, which reduces the risk of puddles and flooding. Additionally, it is very customisable, offering a wide range of colours and finishes.
