Tegula Block Paved Driveway in Ipswich
We recently completed a stunning Tegula block paved driveway for a homeowner in Ipswich, completely transforming the front of their property. The project involved replacing an outdated gravel driveway with a sleek and durable block paving solution that enhances both the aesthetics and functionality of the space.
Before & After
Before:
The original driveway in Ipswich consisted of loose gravel and an old concrete path, which was uneven, difficult to maintain and lacked proper drainage. Over time, the surface had become unstable, with weeds growth through and water pooling, making it impractical.
After:
Following the transformation, the driveway now features a stunning Tegula block paving design in a mix of grey tones, creating a sleek, durable and low-maintenance surface. The addition of charcoal edging and an ACO drainage system ensures both style and functionality.

Process Overview
1. Excavation and Preparation
The first step was to clear the existing surface, which consisted of loose gravel and a section of concrete. This surface was uneven, prone to movement, and lacked proper drainage, making it unsuitable for long-term use. To ensure a solid foundation, we excavated the entire area to the required depth, this allowed us to remove the any unstable material and create a stable sub-grade that would support the new driveway structure. During this stage, we also assessed the soil conditions and ensured any necessary groundwork adjustments were made.
2. Installing the Sub-Base
A strong and stable foundation is essential for any driveway to prevent sinking or movement over time. For this project, we installed a high-quality MOT Type 1 sub-base. This crushed stone aggregate was laid in layers and mechanically compacted using a plate compactor to create a solid and even base. The sub-base was built to a thickness, providing excellent load-bearing capacity for vehicles. A slight gradient was introduced to aid water runoff and prevent pooling.
3. Edging and Borders Installation
To give the driveway a structured and refined appearance, we installed charcoal block edging around the perimeter. This step is crucial, as edging:
- Defines the shape of the driveway
- Helps retain the block paving and prevents movement over time.
- Adds a contrasting design element that enhances visual appeal.
The edging blocks were set in concrete to provide additional strength strength and durability. This ensured that they would remain firmly in place, even with repeated vehicle use.
4. Laying the Tegula Block Paving
Once the groundwork was complete, we began laying the block paving in a carefully planned pattern, we selected a mix of grey tones, which not only complemented the property’s exterior but also provided a rustic yet modern aesthetic. The blocks were laid on a sharp sand bedding layer, which was screeded to a uniform depth. This provided a level surface while allowing for slight adjustments as the blocks were positioned. The blocks were carefully arranged in a random pattern to enhance the natural, tumbled effect that Tegula style paving is known for. Each block was hand-set with precision, ensuring tight, consistent joints that would improve the longevity and stability of the driveway.
5. Installing Drainage and Finishing Touches
Proper drainage is essential to prevent water pooling and surface flooding, especially on paved driveways. To manage rainwater runoff effectively, we installed an ACO drain system along the front edge of the driveway. This discreet but highly effective drainage channel directs excess water into the appropriate edge of the driveway, ensuring the driveway remains dry and safe in all weather conditions. After laying all the blocks, the entire driveway was compacted using a vibrating plate compactor. This process helped to bed the blocks firmly into the same layer and eliminate any minor height variations. Finally we brushed kiln-dried sand into the joints between the blocks. This step helps lock the paving in place, preventing movement and reducing the likelihood of weeds growing inbetween blocks.

The new driveway not only enhances the property’s kerb appeal but also provides a low-maintenance, weather-resistant and long-lasting solution. The rustic appearance of Tegula blocks adds character, while the well-defined borders and smooth curves ensure a seamless integration with the existing landscaping.
